They will be displayed in the poster area. The micrographs will be examined by a panel of judges who will determine the prizes.

The winners of the AMMRF Best Micrograph Award are:

1. Best Life Sciences Micrograph: Dr Margaret Butler (University of Queensland)

2. Best Physical Sciences Micrograph: Dr Peter Hines (Queensland University of Technology)

AMMS Distinguish Service Award

The AMMS Distinguish Service Award recognises outstanding contributions to the Society and to the Australian microscopy and microanalysis community over a period of at least 10 years.

The winners of the 2010 AMMS Distinguish Service Awards are:

1. Dr John Fitz Gerald (Australian National University)

2. Dr Peter Miller (Monash University)

3. Professor Martin Saunders (University of Western Australia)

David Goodchild Award

Preference will be given to early to mid-career researchers, particularly applicants who have not previously travelled overseas to attend a conference. Past applicants are encouraged to reapply.

The winner of the 10th David Goodchild Award is Dr Lilian Soon (University of Sydney).

FEI Company Cowley-Moodie Award

The 2010 FEI Company Cowley-Moodie Award of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society Inc. is proudly sponsored by nanoTechnology Systems. The FEI Company Cowley-Moodie Award is open to electron microscopists working in the physical sciences, and will provide an international air ticket for the recipient to present a paper at an international scientific conference and/or to visit overseas scientific laboratories within twelve months of the award.

The award will be judged on the basis of a piece of original research in the physical sciences involving electron microscopy, completed since April 2006. The work must have been carried out in Australia. Preference will be given to early to mid-career researchers. Past applicants are encouraged to reapply.

The winner of the 2010 FEI Company Cowley-Moodie Award is Dr Adrian D'Alfonso (University of Melbourne).

John Sanders Medal

The John Sanders Medal was established to promote excellence in developing or applying electron microscope techniques in the physical or chemical sciences, and to perpetuate the name of John Sanders. This is the ninth award of the medal, the first having been awarded at ACEM-11 in 1990.

The medal is to be awarded for excellence in developing or applying electron microscope techniques, with particular attention to problems of practical importance in the physical and chemical sciences. The award shall be given for original research making, in the opinion of the selection committee, the most important contribution to the subject as defined above, and recorded in papers of international standing published during the previous five years, and supported, where appropriate, by unpublished papers ready for publication.

The winners of the 2010 John Sanders Medal are:

1. Professor John Drennan (University of Queensland)

2. Dr John Fitz Gerald (Australian National University)

Trans-Tasman Bursary

The Trans-Tasman Bursary is sponsored by ProSciTech and is intended to further cooperation between microscopists in Australia and New Zealand. It is awarded to an Australian and a New Zealand resident on alternate occasions. This time it will be awarded to an Australian microscopist attending ACMM-21 in Brisbane so as to enable that microscopist to attend the 2011 New Zealand Microscopy Conference.

The winner of the Trans-Tasman Bursary to attend the 2011 New Zealand Microscopy Conference is Mr Rahi Varsani (University of Western Australia).

John Farrant Prizes

The John Farrant Prizes were instigated to honour the name of John Farrant and his contribution to the establishment of a thriving electron microscopy community in Australia. The Prizes are funded by a generous gift from Mrs Patricia Farrant.

The John Farrant Prizes are awarded for scientifically significant student presentations given at the biennial conferences of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society Inc. At ACMM-21, two Prizes, comprising a certificate and $1000, will be available. One can be awarded for research in the Biological or Medical Sciences and one can be awarded for research in the Physical Sciences. A panel of national and international microscopists present at the ACMM-21 will judge the suitability of presentations for award of the Prizes.

It is a condition of being eligible for the John Farrant Prize that nominees must provide proof of status as a full-time student.
